In Chinese medicine, food therapy and dietary factors are the first consideration when treating patients. One of the primary means of developing a proper treatment plan is to assess a person’s natural constitution, lifestyle and current food protocols.

The foods we choose can either aid or hinder our efforts to recover from illness and maintain health. In Chinese medicine, food therapy and dietary factors are the first consideration when treating patients. It is not as simple as eating only nutritious foods, but eating according to your constitutional nature and working with the five flavours of the traditional Chinese theory: salty, sour, bitter, sweet and pungent.

Chinese medicine classifies food according to its energetic nature rather than according to its nutritional components. Certain foods are seen as cooling and draining, while others are warming and nourishing. Some foods are helpful for tonifying Qi (energy), while others have properties that build blood, yin or yang. Eating a breakfast that contains oatmeal and fruit will have the same nutritional value; but according to the Chinese medicine principles, it will benefit those with heat in the stomach, but may be harmful to conditions that present with dampness.

It is my goal to properly educate you on how food works for your individual constitution and assess how this may be contributing to any current health concerns, and developing a deeper understanding of how food works as medicine.

As part of a treatment plan, we can work together to identify your personal constitution, assess your current food regime and create a food plan, including recipes, that will assist with your health concerns.
